Abstract

Charles Coquelin's treatise on credit and banking (1848) is one of the strongest arguments for free banking in the French liberal tradition. Coquelin demonstrates that government monopoly over money and credit leads to instability, while competition among banks produces sounder currencies and more efficient allocation of capital.
