Introduction

In a world where payments are becoming increasingly digital, Bitcoin is gradually establishing itself as an alternative. Yet for many novices, managing a wallet or accepting Bitcoin payments can seem complicated.
That's where Coinos comes in, a platform designed by Adam Soltys, a web developer who created the first version to help merchants in his area accept Bitcoin payments.
Coinos is a simple, intuitive platform designed to be easy to use. It allows you to send, receive and accept payments in Bitcoin, Liquid or Lightning, directly from your browser, without any technical installation. Accessible to all, Coinos combines the advantages of Bitcoin with the simplicity of a web application (Progressive Web App, or PWA), ideal for individuals, merchants and the curious.

First steps with Coinos

You don't need any technical or in-depth knowledge before taking Coinos in hand. However, a basic understanding of Bitcoin, on chain, Lightning and Liquid transactions is a plus.

Create an account

Go to the [Coinos] website (https://coinos.io/) in your browser and click on Start in seconds.
Enter your Username and a Password, then click on Register.
You will then be redirected to the wallet's main interface. Whether on your computer or smartphone, the interface remains the same.
At the top, above your avatar, you'll find the interface icon:
  • main**
  • of receipt**
  • transaction history**
  • of shipment**
  • drop-down menu**
Then you have
  • your avatar ;
  • your username ;
  • a small drop-down menu containing your Lightning Coinos address, a public URL and a payment code (LNURL address);
  • and a pencil icon that redirects you to the Account submenu.
In the middle are the Receive and Send icons. Just above the Receive icon, your wallet balance is displayed in Satoshi and in the local currency you have selected.
The bottom left and right corners show the current price of one bitcoin in the chosen local currency, and the number of satoshis equivalent to one unit of account denominated in the chosen local currency.
Coinos, as a web wallet, is not available on the Play Store or App Store. However, there is a way to install it. From your browser, once on Coinos, first click on the three dots in the top corner of your screen.
Then select Add to home screen.
Finally, click on Install.
Bingo! You'll now be able to see it displayed in your phone's applications menu.

Portfolio configuration

Click on the down menu interface button and then on Preferences.
In Preferences, there are 4 submenus that allow you to configure your wallet:
  • Account**
In this submenu, you can change your username, set a new password, change your avatar (profile picture), add a banner photo and even a description.
  • Point of Sale** (POS)
Here, you can choose your language and local currency, enter your e-mail address, activate notifications according to your preferences, and, if you're a merchant, connect your wallet to Square to facilitate your payments.
  • Nostr**
If you have an account with Nostr, you can link it to your Coinos account.
  • Safety features**
You can activate a security code, enable two-factor authentication, and even add another account in this submenu.
Don't forget to click on Save settings each time you make a modification to save your changes.
Once your configuration is complete, return to the main interface by clicking on its icon.

The different types of bitcoin payments

Coinos supports :
  • Bitcoin on the main chain (on chain)** with address formats such as SegWit, Taproot and Legacy ;
  • Lightning** LNURL, Bolt 11 and Bolt 12 ;
  • and others, notably via the Liquid network and the Ecash protocol.

Receive bitcoins

To receive bitcoins on Coinos, click either on Receive, or on the receive interface icon. Once on the receiving interface, ask your sender which network to send the bitcoins to, to determine which address to send them to.

Reception on the main channel

Click on Bitcoin.
A QR code and a delivery address are then automatically generated.
You can personalize them by defining a specific amount and a memo (label).
Your QR code and your personalized Bitcoin address are now ready; all you have to do is forward them to your sender to receive your bitcoins.

Reception via Liquid

Click on More options, then on Liquid.
A QR code and a Liquid reception address are also generated.
Coinos reminds you that you must only send Liquid** (L-BTC) bitcoins to this address or via this QR code.
You can personalize them with a specific amount and a label.
Pass it on to your sender and receive your L-BTC.

Lightning Network reception

By default, the reception interface opens with the Lightning option. You then have your QR code and your Lightning address, which you can personalize with a specific amount and a memo.
Your personalized QR code and Lightning address are now ready. Send them to your sender and receive your satoshis instantly.
To receive payment via Lightning, you can use the small drop-down menu on the wallet's main interface. This allows you to display your Lightning address: you can then copy it or switch to its QR code for easy sharing.
Each time you enter an amount, regardless of the network used, Coinos automatically displays its equivalent in satoshis.

Send bitcoins

If you wish to send bitcoins from your Coinos wallet, click on the send icon. Once on the corresponding interface, you have several options:
  • Scan a QR code provided by the recipient;
  • Paste a copied address into your clipboard ;
  • In the Contacts section, directly select the username of a person with whom you have already carried out transactions;
  • Enter a Bitcoin address (on-chain, Liquid or Bolt LN), a Lightning invoice, or your recipient's Coinos username in the field provided.
After typing or pasting the address, press Next, enter the transaction amount, then press Next again.
The last step before dispatch is to check the information and adjust the network charges to suit you.
To adjust fees, press the small triangle, then select the desired fee level according to the speed of execution you require. The faster the transaction needs to be confirmed, the higher the network fee. Note also that Coinos charges a small service fee. Once all parameters have been checked and adjusted to your preferences, click Send.
Congratulations! Your shipment has arrived.
Let's try sending between Coinos users. Let's send 21 satoshis to Adam Soltys, who has a unique Coinos address: adam.
You can also try sending me some satoshis via my Lightning address: [email protected].
There are no platform fees for transactions between Coinos users.

Transaction history

To view your transaction history, click on the transaction history interface icon.
For each transaction, the following information will be displayed: the amount, the network used, and the date and time. While the balance displayed on the main wallet interface is a unified balance.

Additional features

Coinos offers a number of additional features, including :
  • La Carte des commerçants (French only)
Coinos wallet includes a map listing the merchants who use the platform. All the establishments listed accept Bitcoin payments, notably via their Coinos wallet. To display this map, click on the drop-down menu icon, then select Map. You'll then see a list of businesses and their locations around the world.
When you click on a business, you'll see its label, and clicking on the label takes you to its Coinos profile. This allows you to pay for your purchases at that store using Coinos.
  • Help desk**
If you have any problems using Coinos, you can :
  1. or fill in a form directly in the application to submit your concerns,
  2. or send an e-mail directly to [email protected].
To access this menu, click on the drop-down menu icon and then on Assistance.

Safety and best practices

Security is a key issue when spending bitcoins. Even though Coinos makes the experience simple and seamless, it's important to protect your bitcoins.
  • Use a strong password: Always choose a password that is unique, long and difficult to guess.
  • Activate dual authentication (2FA).
  • Keep your login private: never share your password with anyone. Coinos will never ask you for it, either by message or e-mail.
  • Don't store large sums on the hosted instance: Coinos is convenient for daily payments, but remains a custodial solution. Keep only what you need for day-to-day transactions. For larger amounts, opt for a non-custodial wallet.
