Beginner’s Guide to BitKit: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Install BitKit

Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
Search for “BitKit” and confirm you see the official orange brand icon.
Tap Get or Install, then Open once the download finishes.
Tip: If you spot any impostor apps, double-check the publisher. BitKit is published by Synonym Software Ltd.

2. First Launch and Terms

Launch BitKit, agree to the Terms of Use, and tap Continue.
Tap Get Started to begin the onboarding flow.
Ignore Restore Wallet for now; we will create a new wallet.

3. Back Up Your Wallet Seed

BitKit is self custodial, so the twelve-word seed phrase is your only recovery method.
Tap Back Up Now when prompted.
Write down the twelve words on paper and store them offline in a secure place.
Confirm the words when asked, then tap Save.
Warning: Lose the seed, lose your coins. There is no reset button.

4. Savings vs. Spending Accounts

BitKit automatically creates two accounts:
Savings: Bitcoin base layer
Larger, slower, more secure transfers
Spending: Lightning Network
Small, instant everyday payments
Switch between them with the tab at the top of the home screen.

5. Receive Bitcoin On Chain (Savings)

Select Savings.
Tap Receive to generate a fresh Bitcoin address.
Share the QR code or copy the address to the sender.
Funds will appear after one confirmation. Confetti will celebrate the arrival.

6. Receive Over Lightning (Spending)

Select Spending and tap Receive.
Enter an amount (for example, 10 000 sats) and tap Continue.
BitKit will estimate the fee to open a channel (liquidity requirement).
Tap Continue to generate a Lightning invoice.
Let the sender scan or paste the invoice. Funds settle in seconds.

7. Send a Lightning Payment

Tap the Scan icon, scan a Lightning invoice, or paste it.
Enter the amount if required, then tap Continue.
Review the fee and add an optional tag for bookkeeping.
Swipe to Pay, enter your PIN, and you are done.
Details of the transaction, including fee and timestamp, appear in the Activity feed.

8. Create Your Profile and Contacts

Tap the avatar in the top left.
Enter a display name and select a profile picture.
BitKit shows your personal QR code. Friends can scan it to add you.
Accept or deny the request to allow contacts to pay you.
Once a contact is added, simply tap their name in Contacts to send or request sats.

9. Explore Widgets

From the home screen, swipe to the Widgets section. Tap the gear icon to add or edit:
Bitcoin Price Ticker – choose up to four fiat currencies and set the time frame (day, week, month, year).
News Feed – headlines from leading Bitcoin sources.
Bitcoin Facts – bite-sized trivia for beginners.
Calculator – convert between sats and fiat instantly.
Weather Widget – shows network fee “weather,” indicating good times for on-chain transactions (sunny means low congestion).

10. Shop with Bitcoin

BitKit integrates with Bitrefill for gift cards, phone refills, and more.
Tap Shop in the bottom navigation.
Choose Gift Cards and pick a merchant (for example, Bitrefill).
Select an amount (as low as 1 USD), add an email for delivery, then Checkout.
Swipe to Pay. The gift card code arrives by email within seconds.

11. Quick Pay

Quick Pay auto-confirms Lightning invoices below a custom limit (default 50 USD).
Go to Settings → General → Quick Pay.
Set your threshold and enable the switch.
Small purchases like coffee no longer require swiping.

12. Security and Privacy

PIN Code – enable under Settings → Security & Privacy and set a six-digit code.
Biometrics – toggle on Face ID or fingerprint unlock.
Auto-Lock – choose timeout (e.g. 90 seconds of inactivity).
Require PIN for Payments – extra peace of mind.

13. Managing Lightning Channels

What is a Channel?
A channel is a two-party tunnel that holds liquidity, split into:
Outbound – your bitcoin, used to send.
Inbound – counterparty bitcoin, required to receive.
Transfer from Savings to Spending
Open Savings, tap Transfer to Spending.
Enter the amount (for example, 25 000 ₿) and tap Continue.
Approve the fee and wait for the on-chain transaction to confirm.
Once open, the spending balance and receiving capacity update.
View or Close a Channel
Settings → Advanced → Lightning Connections
Tap a connection to see status, balances, and fees.
Scroll to Close Connection if you wish to shut it and return funds to Savings.
Note: For regulatory reasons, total liquidity in BitKit is limited to roughly nine hundred ninety euro worth of Bitcoin.

14. Advanced Features

Coin Selection – choose specific UTXO inputs for privacy or fee control (Settings → Advanced → Coin Selection).
Transaction Speed – pick Slow, Normal, or Fast on-chain fee targets.
Local Currency – switch from USD to any major fiat under Settings → General.
