How to Create a Bitcoin Community

Which communication channels should you choose?

As mentioned above, a community's communication channels can differ according to motivations and habits.
For example, in France, Germany and Italy, Telegram and Twitter are the dominant platforms, and have become the "standard" for Bitcoin communities. By contrast, in the Czech Republic, many communities use Matrix, a secure instant messaging protocol, instead of Telegram.
Tip: Before choosing your channels, look at what nearby communities are doing. Use the map btcmap.org to see which platforms are most popular in your region.
For instance, Swiss communities primarily use Telegram, Twitter, and their own website:
Recommended Channels for French-Speaking Communities
Telegram: The #1 communication tool, over 90% of French meet-ups use it.
Twitter (X): The main social network used by bitcoiners over the world. It is used by ~70% of French meet-ups. It is ideal for reaching bitcoiners.
Meetup.com: Paid but widely used (by ~30% of French meet-ups and nearly all Canadian ones) to increase visibility outside the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Other options: ~30% also have a website; ~10% run Discord servers or NOSTR accounts.
Other platforms like Matrix, Keet, Signal, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn can also be used. Beware, the more channels you manage, the more time you'll spend moderating, posting, and keeping them active.
Anyone wishing to launch a community in France would therefore be well advised to start by creating:
  • a Telegram group;
  • a Twitter account.
As your community grows, you can add more platforms and delegate moderation to trusted members.
