Twitter is very easy to use, and to improve your privacy, you'll need to adjust a few settings.
When creating a new Twitter account, four essential pieces of information must be entered::
1/ the @ Twitter, which defines your identity and makes you easy to find. If your community's name is "Bitcoin [CITY]", it's appropriate to choose "@Bitcoin[CITY]";
2/ the logo and banner you've created for your community or meet-up (see section Create a logo, poster and banner);
3/ the description, which allows you to share key information about your community in a few hundred characters. For example:
Official account of the Bitcoin [CITY] community #BTC | Meet-ups every 1st Wednesday of the month at [BAR_NAME] in [CITY] 🍻 | Join us on Telegram 🔽
4/ Below this description, it is possible to insert a link. This can lead users to a "social media" page on your community's website, or to your Telegram channel. It's up to you to decide what you want to highlight.
Additionally, a few privacy settings are worth adjusting:
- leave your Twitter account in "public " mode (posts visible to anyone);
- allow everyone to find you;
- disable location tracking and data sharing with other entities (in the privacy settings).
For each event, you'll likely use Twitter to share useful information. But, like most social networks, visibility is everything.
To save you considerable time, we took the time to study Twitter's open-source ranking algorithm.
Here are the key things to focus on to boost your visibility:
-
General Tips:
- Tweet in your account's set language or in English: tweeting in other languages can reduce your visibility a lot;
- Stick to your niche, only share content related to your account's focus; off-topic tweets are penalized by the algorithm;
- Aim for 1 to 2 tweets per day;
- Post during peak hours: Thursday or Friday between 8 to 10 a.m. tends to perform best (check in your account: Twitter Analytics).
-
When writing a tweet:
- add a photo (or even a video);
- Use only one hashtag (usually #Bitcoin is the most relevant. If appropriate, you can add a trending hashtag related to your account area);
- Encourage your community to interact:
- Like = weight 0.5
- Retweet = weight 1
- Reply = weight 27 (!!)
- Reply to people who respond to your tweets (weight of 75!!);
- Avoid placing links in the main tweet: instead, add them in the first comment.;
- Write words in full, avoid abbreviations.
-
Other Tips:
- Tweet about trending topics, as long as they align with your account's area of expertise;
- Repost your top-performing tweets;
- Occasionally run polls;
- Write threads when possible;
- Encourage your community to visit your profile and follow you.
What's more, you can pin a tweet or thread to your Twitter profile to give it maximum visibility, just like the Bitcoin Witsand community in South Africa does.
Also note that it's possible to stay logged into two Twitter accounts at the same time, on both phone and computer. This is super handy if you want to switch easily between your personal and community accounts.
Just be careful... accidentally posting a party photo from the community account can happen faster than you think!
Finally, even though your username "@Bitcoin[CITY]" is unique and now yours, it's smart to anticipate fake or copycat accounts. Consider also registering:
- @Bitcoin_[CITY]
- @[CITY]Bitcoin
- @[CITY]_Bitcoin
That way, you'll greatly reduce the chances of someone impersonating your community.
